Independent advice on Small Modular Reactors – siting, licensing, delivery. Talk to us
SMR Nuclear Technology Pty Ltd (SMR-NT) is an independent Australian-owned specialist consulting company. It was established to advise on and facilitate the siting, development, and operation of safe nuclear power generation technologies, principally Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
The directors have over 100 years of combined experience in power generation, including nearly 50 years of nuclear power generating experience.
Small Modular Reactors are advanced nuclear reactors with an output of up to about 300 MWe per unit. They are designed to be built in factories and installed in stages.
SMRs provide firm, low-carbon electricity that works alongside wind and solar. They can run around the clock, support grid stability, and supply power or heat to industry and remote communities.
Factory-Built Modules: Reactor modules are fabricated under controlled factory conditions and shipped to site, ensuring consistent quality and shorter on-site construction.
Scalable Capacity: Units can be added step by step as demand grows, allowing a project to start small and expand over time.
Flexible Siting: Their compact footprint makes them suitable for former coal-plant sites, industrial users, and remote grids.
Safety by Design: Many SMR designs use passive safety systems that rely on natural forces such as gravity and convection to cool the reactor, reducing dependence on operator action and external power.
Siting and Feasibility: Assessing candidate locations, grid connection, cooling, and community considerations for a new SMR project.
Development and Operation: Advising on technology selection, project development, and the safe, long-term operation of nuclear generation.

SMRs deliver firm (reliable), low-carbon electricity that balances the intermittent nature of wind and solar. They enhance grid stability and offer a practical clean energy solution for industry and remote areas.
Because modules are built in a factory and shipped to site, on-site construction of an SMR is expected to be shorter than for a large reactor. Total project timelines also depend on siting studies, community engagement and licensing, which usually take longer than construction itself. SMR-NT helps clients plan each stage realistically.
Used fuel is first cooled in storage pools at the plant, then moved into sealed dry casks for safe on-site storage. Long-term disposal is in a deep geological repository, an approach already being implemented in countries such as Finland.
Yes. In addition to our Sydney base, SMR-NT has an office in Ludhiana, Punjab, and supports clients and partners in both Australia and India.
