Australia Must Be Future-Ready for the AI and Robotics Revolution
Australia must be future-ready. We cannot afford to miss the AI and robotics revolution.
At @SMR Nuclear Tech, we propose a rigorous pathway to assess and responsibly develop Small Modular Reactors for data centres, industry and national electricity generation.
Australians deserve to capture the investment, skills and productivity this technological transformation could bring.
Humanoid robotics developers are attracting billion-dollar funding rounds and planning large-scale manufacturing. Capable robotics could eventually support an ageing population and help address workforce shortages. These opportunities require dependable electricity, computing infrastructure and skilled people.
The consequences of infrastructure delays are already visible.
On 21 October 2026, @NEXTDC shares closed at A$5.35, down 41.72%. NEXTDC reduced FY2027 net revenue guidance to A$475–500 million, from A$615–640 million, following power delays at M3 Melbourne.
The next grid supply increase is expected in FY2028. NEXTDC attributed delays to suspended @Jemena works amid community opposition and approval constraints. Data hall construction continues.
Solar contributes valuable electricity. Continuous supply also requires storage, complementary generation and infrastructure. Protecting productive farmland and comparing full lifetime costs must remain priorities.

SMRs face significant cost, commercial maturity and delivery challenges. They deserve independent assessment as a long-term option alongside immediate grid investment.
We call on governments to:
- Remove legislative barriers and establish a rigorous SMR approval pathway.
- Assess suitable data centre and industrial precinct applications.
- Require credible safety, financing, water, waste and decommissioning plans.
- Engage communities early and protect household electricity consumers.
